5 Year - Hoops 4 Israel - Get your game in check....

Written by: Dave Goodman

It's been quite a ride, the Hoops 4 Israel roller coaster of the past 5 years that is.  Hundreds of Toronto's youth have banded together on a yearly basis to rally their networks to support the vulnerable communities of Bat Yam and Kiryat Moshe since 2006.

Touted as one of the largest niche fundraising campaigns of the 250,000 plus global Taglit-Birthright Israel alumni, Hoops 4 Israel has incredibly raised over $450,000 in 4 years.
The event model has become a source of community solidarity and zionistic pride towards our Jewish nation.  In each of the past 3 years, over 200 volunteers have taken part in the event at Hoopdome as either participants and solicitors of donations, or, as organizing committee members.  Most incredibly, the H4I operational budget is run with such efficiency, that under 10% of fundraised dollars are spent on executing the initiative on a yearly basis.  By industry standards, this is very impressive if we do say so ourselves.

Hoops 4 Israel is proud to announce for the fifth straight year, Riocan REIT has signed on to the naming rights to the Title sponsorship for the Sunday, April 24th event at Downsview Park's Hoopdome.

President & CEO, Ed Sonshine and Executive VP & COO, Fred Waks; strong supporters of the
State of Israel and the game of basketball seen here when the raps were good in 2006.

H4I is also thrilled to have the continued support of the following
corporate sponsors for a fifth straight year representing
teams participating in the event:

This event does not happen without the incredible leadership of dedicated volunteers to the cause and gameday logistics.  32 teams, $30,000 worth of in kind product and services and a fund raising goal of $125,000 can only be achieved with the help of the following H4I event chairs for 2011:

We are looking forward to the challenge and are hoping the Toronto Jewish Community will rise up to support this important cause through the support channels of UJA Federation of Greater Toronto and the United Israel Appeal of Canada division.

H4I is a product of Birthright Israel Alumni Community (BAC) and now,
UJA's Community Connect > 'We do just that!'

Tu'Bshvat- What?

Tu'Bshvat is the holiday of the trees. It may seem strange that we celebrate trees when they are seemingly at their worst. The amazing thing about trees is that we know in a few months, they will be green and lush.

Tu'Bshvat allows us to take the opportunity to appreciate all the beauty in the world. Each person is like a tree: there are times when we seem barren and empty, especially during the winter season; but like trees, we will rejuvenate, blossom and grow!

So how do we celebrate this tree holiday?

Try eating something from these Seven Species:

Almonds,Olives,Figs,Dates,Pomegranate,Wheat,Grapes

Amazing office treat!

Shout out to Jodi K for the Tu'Bshvat spread!

1800 Jews hitting Sin City!

How many people can say their Jewish mother has told them to go spend some time in Vegas? Sounds like an oxy moron right? Well this March I'm going to bank on many Jewish mothers who are encouraging their son's and daughter's to go to Vegas...it wouldn't surprise me if they even offered to foot the bill...1800 Jews from across the nation between the ages of 22-45, makes Vegas sound that less sinful to any Jewish mother!
3 nights at the Mandalay Bay Las Vegas celebrating Jewish music, food, arts, and entertainment, I'm told it could bring out some pretty big names in terms of Jewish celebrities, which got me thinking about the casual run ins I could have around the black jack table...

Here are my top 5 desired Jewish celebrity spotting's at the black jack table:

Words of Wisdom

As a birthright madrich (leader) it is my passion to educate, mentor and inspire my participants. But it is more often than not that it is my participants who inspire and teach me.

Following tragic news Natalie Roz, a participant of mine wrote these powerful and moving words:

"Having met the soldiers in Israel I really hope it gave everyone a perspective into a different world. We were fortunate enough to meet 8 incredible soldiers. I personally connected really well with Daniel Raz who is currently serving in the Hevron (West Bank). Yesterday there was an exchange of fire between the Gaza Strip and Israel. Daniel's best friend fell in this exchange fire. He was also 20 years old. Nadav Rotenberg died trying to protect the Jewish people, his homeland- The state of Israel.

He just like me and you, had hopes, dreams, plans for the future. Has a mother, a father , a sister and two brothers waiting for him to return home. Has friends that all love him very much. But he will no longer be able to be a part of their life. He gave his life for the sole purpose of protecting all those he loves and cares most about.

We are so fortunate to be living in Canada. A country at peace with its neighbours, please never forget that. Please kindly take a second out of your day to realize that yet another soldier as young as 20 has been buried in another Israeli cemetery. This is not the end... this is not even the middle...

As a Jew you have an obligation to your fellow Jews. Never forget where you're from and who/what it took to get you here. As you and I return home and are faced to deal with our realities. The soldiers we met, are forced to return and deal with theirs.

My thoughts and prayers are with Daniel and the Rotenberg family."

Some comments from the group to which Daniel Raz responded:

"Hey guys! A huge thank you from me and his family. They also wanted to say that they are happy his name got so far to Canada and his story will be told. We are not taking that for granted.. Thank you all!"
